Green Tea and Cancer Prevention

Green teaGreen Tea is Rich in Nutrients That May Prevent Cancer

Over the years, there have been multiple research studies published that suggest that green tea may help prevent several types of cancer.  This is the conclusion from a meta-analysis recently published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.  Extensive research has shown that substances in green tea, known as polyphenols, may have cancer preventative properties.  Of particular interest to the scientific community, is a polyphenol known as Polyphenon E, which acts as a powerful antioxidant inhibiting the growth of cancer cells.

Drinking several cups of green tea every day is a great idea if you are thinking in terms of a cancer preventative diet. I would also recommend consuming several servings of fruits and vegetables every day for additional health benefits. One of the most important things we can do to help maintain health, particularly as we age, is to increase our consumption of antioxidants.

What are Antioxidants?

free radical damgeAntioxidants are substances that help protect our cells from free radicals.  Free radicals, are atoms, like oxygen, with unpaired electrons — making them unstable. Free radicals can be naturally produced in our bodies when we exercise, or when we fight an infection.  Or, when we are exposed to a toxic substance.  A common exposure to free radicals is chronic sun exposure, which can damage cells and produce free radicals on the surface of our skin; resulting in skin damage and aging.

Free radicals are very unstable and capable of damaging the cells of the body, which is why antioxidants are so important to our health. And an important subject when it comes to longevity studies. Free radicals are formed in our bodies through natural processes, like burning calories.  Or, we can be exposed to free radicals through sun exposure, or as a by-product of radiation therapy.

Antioxidants are important because they are substances capable of neutralizing free radicals; reducing our risk of those diseases associated with aging.

How We Age and How Antioxidants Can Help Us Stay Younger Longer

Unfortunately, when our cells are damaged, they can later form cancer cells or simply die.  On the skin, this is seen as the formation of wrinkles. Some vitamins, such as vitamins A, C, and E, as well as selenium, can act as antioxidants. And these nutrients are very important in promoting the health of anyone trying to slow down the aging process.  But furthermore, there are pigments in plants, known as bioflavonoids, which can also help protect the body from free radicals. A diet rich in nutrient-dense plants can dramatically improve our health, and slow down the aging process.

I Usually Chose a Versatile and Organic Tea With Great Flavor to My Patients

http://There are several great green tea companies on the market that I am exceptionally fond of. And I will often prescribe green tea as a medical food for patients wishing to reduce their risk of cancer, and for general overall health.

The first product I usually recommend is Green Foods Matcha Powder.  This product is certified organic and can be made either hot or cold.  Green Foods Matcha Powder, is quite versatile.  This tea can even be put directly in morning smoothies for added health benefits.  For best results, I use about 1 teaspoon a day in smoothies.  I find it lends a pleasant earthy flavor that I enjoy.  Green Foods Matcha Green Tea can be prepared either as a hot or a cold beverage.  And I enjoy drinking it.

I also like many of the teas currently available by the company Numi.  Numi is also certified organic, and their teas are very high-quality.  I especially like the bold, strong flavor of their gunpowder tea, and drink it often.
