When I think of naturopathic medicine, my mind naturally wanders to images of nature, like the forest I grew up surrounded by in the Pacific Northwest. I think of nature as inherently therapeutic. I am reminded of the smell of the air after a fresh rain; the beauty that assaults you when you are walking in a rainforest in the early morning. Simply by walking in the forest, research has shown, people become calmer and happier. For someone like me, who grew up so close to nature, being in a large city like Los Angeles can be both stressful and very disorienting. And while I may even prescribe walking in nature as a form of therapy to my patients; the challenge is in finding it readily available in the large city.

There is much to love about Los Angeles, and there is in fact, quite a bit of beauty here as well. But what I have found helps me maneuver the city best are its many wonderful parks and museums. Such places are like sanctuaries to me. And I take great joy in exploring these treasures wherever and whenever I can. Of special note is the Exposition Park Rose Gardens, that often boast some of the most beautiful roses during the spring and summer months, you can find information herehttp://www.laparks.org/exporosegarden/rosegarden.

Los Angeles Has Some Amazing Parks

I have a great deal of affection as well for Runyan Canyon when I want a good hike and to watch people as they romp with their dogs in the off leash area. You can find links to that park here http://www.laparks.org/dos/parks/facility/runyoncanyonpk.htm. You may also enjoy Franklin Canyon, which is an easier hike and you can enjoy admiring the man-made lakes and pond there as well. http://www.lamountains.com/parks.asp?parkid=14. For anyone serious about communing with nature, no trip to Los Angeles would be complete without also visiting Griffith Park, and its many great hiking trails; they also have an observatory that is well worth a visit. http://www.laparks.org/dos/parks/griffithpk

For art lovers who also want to get a great view of the city, I highly recommend seeing the Getty Museum, you can get a sky’s view of the city and the exhibits are always impressive.http://www.getty.edu. So while the city can often be stressful, and at times lonely, I encourage anyone seeking a healing place to rest or just enjoy the day to visit the many areas that make this city a wonderful place to live and practice naturopathic medicine.
